Insulating your external wall
Typical brick pattern in a solid wall construction Solid walls lose even more heat than cavity walls; the most effective way to reduce this heat loss is to insulate them the outside. This is due to the amount of insulation you are able to achieve on the exterior of you home.
Insulating on the exterior will help create a more even indoor climate, help prevent condensation on the walls and ceilings and can also reduce the amount of heat building up inside your home during the summer months
It is easy to tell from the outside whether you have a solid wall construction by looking for the brick pattern on the left.
Typical cavity wall brick patternBetween 25 %– 40% of heat is lost through an uninsulated cavity wall. By insulating, you could be reducing your heating costs by 15% and save around 800kg of carbon per annum.
In most houses built after the 1920s, the external walls are made in two layers with a small air gap or 'cavity' between them. This gap can vary in size, but if you were to insulate it, you would be able to save significantly on the energy you use to heat your home.
Generally a cavity wall construction would be indicated by a brick pattern such as on the left.
